Environment

Our community enjoys clean air and water and a beautiful natural environment, but none of that is guaranteed to stay that way. Additionally, we are citizens of the world and must do our part to protect our natural resources.

I believe we should:

-Sign the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, which strives to protect our environment through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable land-use policies, energy efficiency measures, and many other means. Southern Pines can do its part and become a Cool City. (Note, some of the statements in the agreement are controversial, but I am told they can be removed if desired).

-Explore how Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) and other similar tools can protect open space and ensure property rights at the same time.

-Apply Smart Growth principles as they apply to a community of our size

-Promote alternative forms of transportation, especially walking and biking in development requirements and in transportation planning and budgeting.

-Strive for LEED certification on our new municipal buildings.
