Chris Smithson for Council
Southern Pines, North Carolina
Waynor Road Community
The Waynor Rd. community is a mostly minority community located near the airport. While they are in Southern Pines' Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ), they are not within the Corporate Limits and therefore do not receive most Town services including water, sewer, and trash pickup. Many homes there have issues with their wells and septic tanks. In cooperation with community representatives, I met with most of the residents and answered their questions. I then reported back to the Council on the meeting and successfully argued we needed to do something to help the community and incorporate the area so the residents could receive full municipal services as well as have full rights as residents. The Council agreed that if the community requested annexation, the Town would accept the application and commit to running water lines into the area.
100% of the residents have signed the petition for voluntary annexation.
The Town has been awarded grants to help cover the costs of water hookups
for individual households and help pay for the water and sewer line extensions.
Construction of waster and wastewarer infrastructure is currently underway
and looks to be finished around the end of the year. I am very proud to be
part of providing life-sustaining services to these people in need as well
as soon welcoming them as residents of Southern Pines.
