Water Supply
Southern Pines enjoys a clean and usually plentiful water source for its residents and customers. As we learned in 2002 when our water supply dipped dangerously low, we need a better buffer to help us get through extraordinarily dry periods.
Because of my interest and level of knowledge in the issues, I represent Southern Pines on the Water Task Force committee of the Moore County Summitt. The committee has representation from all local governments and the County and its mission is to promote cooperation and seek ways to ensure adequate drinking water for all county residents.
I believe we should:
-Continue at full speed towards construction of a new much-larger raw reservoir on property near our treatment plant purchased for this purpose.
-Explore options for working with Carthage which would allow us to draw water from our old reservoir on NC 22, have it treated by Carthage, and have it available for Southern Pines during emergencies. Carthage currently has the ability to draw water from our reservoir for their use, but we have no way of getting treated water back to Southern Pines.
-Continue talks with Pinehurst and other interested parties to explore how the Village's purchase of the Wagram water and wastewater facilities can benefit all of our region.
-Continue to work with other local governments to ensure interconnectivity
and mutual aid in times of water shortage.
