Issues 2009

(Below are just a few of the key isues facing the town now and into the future. I will continue to add and refine information as time allows.) Also see my "Local Issues" page for more comprehensive statements, etc. on events and issues over the last year.

For what I believe to be important accomplishments I have had a major role in while on Council, please visit my Accomplishments Page.

Big Money Invading Southern Pines Elections- We're a nice little town where anyone can run for office and win, right? Money doesn't buy influence in OUR town, right? Only Southern Pines voters have a say in municipal elections, right?

Growth/Development- As they say, the top three biggest issues in Southern Pines are Growth, Growth, and Growth. I am not against growth. I do, however, believe we are not fully prepared to ensure the increased growth, development, and redevelopment we are expecting will be compatible with the character of our community. Environment- Our community enjoys clean air and water and a beautiful natural environment, but none of that is guaranteed to stay that way. Additionally, we are citizens of the world and should do our part to protect our natural resources. Click here for more.

Water Supply- Southern Pines enjoys a clean and usually plentiful water source for its residents and customers. As we learned in 2002 when our water supply dipped dangerously low, we need a better buffer to help us get through extraordinarily dry periods. Click here for more.

Downtown- Downtown Southern Pines is a special place and is an integral part of our economy and our community's character. It must be protected and enhanced. Click here for more.

Unincorporated Areas- There are quite a few examples of properties and neighborhoods in Southern Pines' jurisdictions that are surrounded by "in town" (incorporated) properties but are not "in town" themselves. Some of it is vacant land, but some of it is occupied by people who desperately need services, such as water and sewer, that the Town can provide. Others are more affluent areas completely surrounded by taxpayers and enjoying a Southern Pines location without paying their share. Click here for more

Communication- The Town of Southern Pines should always strive to communicate more clearly and effectively with its residents. Click here for more

Of course there is more to Southern Pines than just the six areas above. If you have questions about something I haven't addressed here or want more info on something I have, please contact me.
